For years, convert2mp3.net was one of the most visited YouTube to MP3 converters in the world. Then, in June 2019, it vanished overnight. Here is what happened, based on what was publicly reported at the time.
Convert2MP3 (convert2mp3.net) was a German-based converter that turned YouTube links into MP3 downloads in the browser. It was enormously popular: IFPI, the global music industry group, claimed the site had 684 million visits in the year before its shutdown.
The music industry took the site to court in Germany. A German court issued a preliminary injunction finding that the site circumvented technological protection measures, the technical systems that control access to content.
In June 2019, the site shut down globally under a settlement with IFPI (the global music industry group) and BVMI (the German music industry group). The reported settlement terms were:
No. This site is a new, separate tool that uses a familiar name. It is not affiliated with the shut-down convert2mp3.net, and it is not run by the same people. If you are looking for the old site, it is gone; its domains belong to IFPI now.
The original shut down globally in June 2019 after a settlement with IFPI and BVMI.
Legal action in Germany over circumventing technological protection measures, ending in a settlement.
No. New tool, familiar name, no affiliation with the old site.
